This Is What Day Clubbing Should Look Like

Let’s list some things that go together; Fish and chips, salt and pepper, Barry O’Farrell and $3,000 bottles of Grange, socks and shoes, Australians and daytime debauchery.

Whether you’re down at one of our famous beaches, a tradie goofing off on the job, or maybe just enjoying the classic Australian summer BBQ – If there’s one thing we know how to do well, it’s enjoying the sunshine all the way from dawn to dusk. The image we perpetuate to the world is that of a sun-drenched, carefree country. When it comes to the Dance music community, it’s about time we started acting like it. So why don’t we dream up what should be?

Venue wise we have two main directions to go in, established venues versus the more ‘DIY’ end of the scale. I’m talking Warehouse raves with glorious sunlight blasting through arched windows (an Australian Berghain anyone?) How about block parties or even simply at one of our many parks or beaches – There are so many beautiful places left at which we could throw sunlit shin-digs given the right opportunity. The crux of the matter is commercial viability. You can’t expect hard working party throwers and venue owners to be putting up the cash for the good of the people unendingly, they need to get paid too.

Which is where some of the up-sides of day parties could come in. You take the entire 3am kebab shop experience and park it in a 3pm timeslot. Genius. And let’s go crazy with merchandise – flamboyant umbrellas and extravagant hats (are you catching on here?) Aim high people! It’s less about what we do and more about just standing up and getting your boogie on in the sunshine.

Progress is already well under way, and day parties have obviously always been around (Summer Dance, Soul of Sydney, S.A.S.H). What we should really push for is a stronger disposition amongst those affected by the lockouts to get it on whilst the sun’s still up. That way those of us putting on the events might actually have a reason to.

It blows that we seem to be stuck with lawmakers who have come down with a serious case of ‘get off my lawn’ syndrome. In history, Authority has always found ways to impede the lifestyle of those who aren’t in power – it’s old news. But hey, Summers here. The lockouts are definitely here. So if the drinks are flowing and good times are sure to be showing then in the words of Lara Bingle ‘Where the bloody hell are you?

If you want a jump start on the daylight action, come protest the laws which are responsible for us needing to have this conversation in the first place.
