Ben Pearce talks Celebrity Masterchef, Sex Mixtapes and his love for Australia!

Ben Pearce is a busy guy. Asides from dominating the charts and already having a club classic under his belt, the young producer has toured the world over twice. In Australia, we are lucky to get not just our second helping, but our third of Ben Pearce and he took some time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions for us.

SR: We’re excited to have you back in Australia again. I think the last time you were down here was your first time right? How did you find it here? Is there anything you’re looking forward to doing this time when you’re back?

BP: There was a time before that, this will be my third time… I love it down there. I’ve made so many friends and had far too many memorable experiences already. It’s tough to know what to do this time around, maybe explore some of the cities a bit more… There’s definitely too much to do everywhere!

SR: I know the year isn’t over yet but if you had to choose the biggest track of year the, what would it be?

BP: So hard to say, so many songs work differently in different places. Maybe ">John Talabot’s remix of Jamie XX’s Loud Places. I think that might be consistently the biggest track for me.

SR: The Sextape Series is an incredible idea, sensual disco on sexy house makes for a perfect mix. Where did the idea come from? How long do you expect to keep the series going?

BP: It was born from a mix I did for a friend’s night in the UK. I did a few more podcasts online along the same vibe, mixing sleaze with fun and it just worked. I always play disco when I can, played a lot at Let Them Eat Cake last time I was over for example… It’s just a fun kind’ve show, no holds barred… play the anthems, everyone sing. It’s great.

SR: I’ve read you like good food just as much as you like good music. Would you go on Celebrity Masterchef if you were invited to? What would your signature dish be?

BP: I’m not sure if I would, I’m a home cook and I love it but some of the challenges may be too much. Signature dish wise, it always changes per season. I love cooking game, balancing the sweet and the sour and the earthiness, that’s a real passion. So maybe something with pigeon, beetroot etc… I don’t know

SR: Are you tired of talking about ">‘What I Might Do’ yet or are you still proud and shocked by the incredible success of the track?

BP: I’m always proud and shocked by it, that’ll never change. Yes it gets mentioned a lot and it’s often talking about the same thing but, it’s the reason I’m doing what I’m doing so I’m past the point of hating it, I’m incredibly lucky.

SR: What’s happening with Purp & Soul at the moment? Are there any big releases coming? Have you scouted any fresh blood for the label?

BP: To be honest we’ve put it on ice, for various reasons I won’t go into, it’s just not the right time to be releasing music. Once it feels like it’s a good time again we’ll carry on, we’re still a tight knit group.

SR: You’ve got a global hit, the DJ Mag award for Best Breakthrough Producer and now your own label. You’ve achieved so much but everyone is always hungry for more. What are your goals for 2016?

BP: Keep on keeping on, basically, I love what this is right now and I wouldn’t want to change it. Of course I want to better myself but for now, especially for the next 12 months is just to keep consistent, make good music and make people dance.
