Reclaim The Streets; 1000’s Attend Anti-Lockout Law Protest (Video)

The sun was shining for a perfect start to Reclaim The Streets, a peaceful party styled protest held on Sunday to remind the government we care about our nightlife.

What started out as a few groups assembling in Hyde Park around 1:00pm and dancing to the various sounds of mobile speaker rigs turned into just over a thousand when the group took to the main roads fronted by the aptly titled banner “Welcome To Sydney *Conditions Apply”.

The protest snaked its way up William Street with various signs, chants and of course a play of The Beastie Boys “You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Party” all keeping the crowd moving towards the start of Kings Cross where the archaic lockout laws that have infringed our nightlife were first imagined.

Even being escorted by a number of police horses, officers and even the sternly gazed riot squad the crowd made up of doof-ers, mums and babies, old school club heads, ravers and every other type of person who enjoys a night out, peacefully moved through the planned route and on towards Taylor Square on Oxford Street all the time smiling, dancing and helping one another (some of the rigs looked heavy!).

Although at the literal end of the protest plenty of crews took up residence in lanes and on-steps and the crowds were treated to sets by Stereogamus, the brothers Steve and Paul Mac, Simon Caldwell, Magda Bytnerowic as well as consistent tunage from crews Afterlife DnB, Rivet and Deeper Than House (anyone else make yourself heard in the comments).

All in all an important day and great result showing that the people do care and are fed up with being punished for the actions of a minority.
