Polographia discuss ‘Natural’, their first release in 4 years

After a 4 year hiatus, Sydney-duo Polographia are back with another nostalgic-laden five track EP titled ‘Natural’ on the Sweat It Out! imprint. We caught up with the pair to discuss what they’ve been up to in the years since ‘Sunsets’, their love for scouting samples for their records, as well as the pleasure of collaborating with some of Australia’s brightest young talents.

SR: Firstly, congratulations on the Natural EP, which is your guys first in four years. How have you guys been spending your time since the ‘Sunsets’ album?

P: Thank you very much. Yeah it’s been a long time but we’re so happy about how far we’ve come since then & how much we’ve learned in that time. We’ve pretty much been focussing on finding our sound and developing our skills and creating our live show.

SR: I feel as if you guys have been able to successfully capture a sound that is peppered with Australian summer time connotations. Something that I personally love about your work is that you are also able to intertwine this sound with a strong sense of nostalgia. Is this a direction and atmosphere you’ve intentionally created?

P: Our songs are usually influenced by the infinite amount of music we listen to and chill to and we’ve always felt really nostalgic towards music. I guess we just combine a selection of sounds we like and let everything happen naturally.

SR: When I listen to your tracks I think of the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never, Star Slinger and Toro Y Moi, as your tunes contain the multi-layered record samples within them. Is hunting down rare snippets from old records something you guys spend a lot of time doing and what do you think they bring to a track?

P: First of all, we’re big fans of all 3 artists! Searching for snippets and samples is what we live for! It’s such a good place for inspiration and getting lost in another world. The samples and collages of sound we collect are like little bits of memories stuck in your brain from your childhood that if you put them back together it creates more memories.

SR: Which artists have helped inspire you guys and whom do you find yourself taking influence from when in the writing and production stages?

P: Way too many! The crazy thing is that no matter how much music you find and listen to, you will never be able to hear every song ever made within your own lifetime. We take inspiration from anything we hear that makes you stop and go WOAH!!!

SR: The EP is a mixture of instrumentals and tracks including the talents of Jordan Padilla for ‘Rhythm’, Goodbye Moon for ‘Up & Down’, as well as VCS for ‘Right On’. What was it like collaborating with such great local Australian musicians?

P: It was incredible! Every amazing talent we worked with! The best things were, how differently everyone worked, how cool it was to just hang out, laugh and jam, and how we were all able to create some great music together despite our different styles and backgrounds.

SR: I feel like this EP is primed for the sweltering months ahead, but where do you see the ideal place to listen to the release?

P: The perfect places to listen to our EP are as follows: Chilling at the beach, in the car road tripping, sitting in a park with friends, late at night through your headphones, on the early morning train to work, while your painting / creating some incredible piece of art, etc. You get the idea haha.

SR: Who are your top 3 favourite up and coming artists at the moment?

  1. Anatole
  2. SWARVY
  3. Martin King

SR: What are your top 3 favourite go-to tracks at the moment?

  1. Roy Ayers – Programmed for Love
  2. Les Sins – Grind
  3. Anything from the new Tame Impala record
