Speakers come in all shapes and sizes, and there’s all kinds of ways to amplify sound beyond that – one of our personal favourite life hacks is the good ol’, phone-in-a-plastic-container amplifier, perfect for an impromptu party or trip to the beach.

But have you ever wanted to amplify nature?

One Estonian student did. And the result is freaking awesome.

Birgit Õigus came up with genius idea to create and install these massive wooden ‘megaphones’ as a way to allow people to “hear the forest.” Studying interior architecture, Õigus recruited a group of fellow students to place three megaphones in an Estonian forest, near the Latvian border.

and installed three gigantic wooden megaphones, which were then installed in a forest in Estonia, not far from the Latvian border.

Spanning three metres in diameter, head of the Interior Architecture department of the school, Hannes Praks, explained that they will act like a “bandstand”, amplifying natural sounds of the surrounding forest.

 

“We’ll be placing the three megaphones at such a distance and at a suitable angle, so at the centre of the installation, sound feed from all three directions should create a unique merged surround sound effect.”

The installation will also act as a sitting or resting area – as you can see from the below images.

Apparently, 51% of Estonia is forest. So this is a pretty quirky way to get in touch with the vast natural surrounds. The project began more than a year ago in a workshop within the woodlands of southern Estonia.
