Scary Times, Yet Another Sydney Venue To Close

Update: Here is the Development Application to turn the Lansdowne into ‘educational use’.

Feeling a little like Groundhog Day another Sydney venue is set to close their doors and cease operating at the end of the month following the recent closure of Hugo’s Lounge in Kings Cross and Q Bar on Oxford Street.

It’ll be the Lansdowne Hotel on City Road in Chippendale that will close for good August 29th after operating for nearly 90 years since it’s inception in 1926. Having played home to countless bands, Hip Hop acts and DJs it’ll be another loss to ever restricting and shrinking Sydney nightlife.

The news broke in the Sydney Drum and Bass Facebook page after a promoter for the popular dnb and unfortunately named Afterlife party unearthed the news.

In a twist of fate the land won’t be turned over to greedy real estate developers but reportedly good friends the Australian Institute of Music the Academy of Music and Performing Arts (AMPA) who’ll be turning the venue into a school of music.

Until an official statement is released as to why the Lansdowne is closing we can only assume as to the reason it’s closing.

They join the venues below that have closed or moved away from live music in the last 12-24 months.

– Spice Cellar Ersknvl
– Goldfish
– Hugos
– Soho/YU
– Flinders
– Backroom
– The Bourbon (on the market)
