Party Favor Talks Booty Loose, Producing Tracks, and Upcoming Mad Decent Adventures

With infectious live performances and a handful of booty shaking beats under his belt that have attracted millions of SoundCloud plays, Party Favor has quickly made a name for himself in the dance music scene. From Jack U playing his “Let Me Clear My Throat” remix at UMF to his Bro Safari and UFO!’s “Drama” remix appearing in the NBA draft commercial, Party Favor has become a household name in the trap scene. After the release of “Bap U” on Diplo‘s Mad Decent, the heavy hitting original tracks and remixes that bass heads crave continued to flow through the speakers of music festivals. From twerk to trap and everything in between, he continues to turn heads as he gains support from Diplo, Skrillex, Dillon Francis, Flosstradamus (to name a few) and has made appearances on killer line ups such as Electric Daisy Carnival, Beyond Wonderland, TomorrowWorld, and Ultra Music Festival. We caught up with Party Favor after his set at Electric Adventure to chat about his new track “Booty Loose” and his upcoming adventures with the Mad Decent family.

SR: What has been your favorite song (remix or original) you’ve produced so far?

PF: I have this track on my upcoming EP that I’m really excited about. It’s called “Body Go” with this vocalist from Chicago named Gibbz. His voice is like…the best thing ever.

SR: The voice of an angel?

PF: Yes, literally. But it’s cool for me because my stuff is always high energy, so crazy and hype, but this track is kind of a change for me. It still has a drop and a ton of energy but it’s a chance to show a more melodic and prettier side of myself and my music. I think it’s going to be really cool because it’s something people aren’t going to be expecting from me. I’ve played it out a couple of times and have gotten great responses. It wasn’t all the way finished at the time, but now it’s all ready to go.

SR: Do you prefer producing tracks that will have a vocalist or tracks without a vocalist?

PF: It definitely brings more to the table when there’s a vocalist but I would say since I’ve started producing with more vocalists, I’d prefer having vocals in my track. Samples are nice because I can pick or choose whatever I want. Being able to work with a vocalist makes it go from a regular dance record to a whole song. I think working with vocalists is great…even if it’s as simple as the vocals for “Booty Loose” because it’s effective, catchy, and it works.

SR: That’s what people like…catchy

PF: The goal overtime is to build my sound and show that I can do more than just put sound clips in my tracks.

SR: So going back to Booty Loose, what was your creative process behind making that track?

PF: The song started as a completely different track. The vocalist, Fly Boi Keno, had sent me a bunch of vocals he had done for some other stuff. He had one part in there that said “make your booty loose” and for some reason it really stuck out to me. So I was like “hey I really like this, let’s make something around it!” and he was “okay cool!” I basically took that, made up a mock up version, and built the entire song around that vocal. It was completely natural, it flowed super well. I hit him up about it and he was like “oh yeah, this is great.” He replied back to me with some stuff and we made a couple of changes, but that was it. It was one of those things where ironically it was the easiest way to work but I think the best work is always that way. From big producers I talk to to other smaller artists I talk to, they agree that the best work is always done quickly. It just happens.

SR: It’s natural.

PF: Exactly, when you sit on stuff for too long, it shows you that it’s not right…it’s not there. The best stuff kinda flows out of you.

SR: So with the original version of Booty Loose, you changed it completely. Would you use that track you started working on for a different track now?

PF: I think it was one of those things where I had one idea and I reached out to Fly Boi Keno for vocals, got them, and used his vocals for something completely different than I originally planned. That made the track even better. I’m one of those people where I’m not going to fight if something is right, you know?

SR: Besides your own original tracks or remixes, what’s a go-to song you love playing during your sets or a track that you’ve been playing a lot in sets lately?

PF: I would say that I play…probably “Soundclash” by Flosstradamus. That’s a good one. Or an unreleased song by Gent & Jawns called “You Know Why.”

SR: God they’re [Gent & Jawns] so underrated. I’m from the DC area so I’ve seen them a handful of times.

PF: Yeah they’re amazing! We have a track in the works right now and it’s gunna be pretty crazy. I’ve got nothing but love for those guys and I always support them. They always send me their new stuff. They have great production and always have great ideas too. That song is just so hard, it turns me up so much. And once you break it down, it’s a simple track. Simple and effective.

SR: What has been your favorite city you’ve played so far?

PF: That’s so hard…I would probably say Brisbane, Australia. In the states, I love Chicago and I love Seattle. I love playing to LA crowds because they are seriously some of the best, but I feel like when you play in your own hometown, people are so use to seeing you, that it’s not as exciting for them since I’m always around.

SR: Like today, you’re on the East Coast in Atlantic City

PF: Exactly, the crowd today was great and I had a great time. I’ve never played in Atlantic City, so it’s something I’ll always remember because this area hasn’t seen me in a while. Like you were saying earlier, you’ve never seen me play before. If I were to choose a top 5, LA would definitely be #2 or #3 though.

SR: Who is your favorite emerging artist? You know, someone who is pretty low key.

PF: I really like Bad Royale, from San Diego. We have a collaboration on my EP. They just signed with Mad Decent and are all really talented guys. They’re basically trance guys that started making bass music together and it’s incredible production. We already have a track done that I played earlier today. But overall, there are a lot of guys that are upcoming that I really vibe with.

SR: Mad Decent Boat Party in November. Fuck yeah. I went last year and am going again this year, what are most excited about?

PF: I think for me, I’m just so excited to have a family and a place in this scene.  If you break it down, it’s pretty broken up and Wes (Diplo) and a lot of the guys have shown me so much. I think that my music really does fit that brand very well. The brand of Mad Decent, energy, and artists on the label are all people I get along with. I’m excited to be on a boat surrounded by people that I look up to. Gent and Jawns, we talked about them earlier, I look up to them. I love being inspired and everyone brings something different to the table. It’s going to be wild, I can’t wait!

SR: It was great last year. Now we’re going to Mexico, so it’ll be a blast.

PF: I start the [Mad Decent] block parties this week so I’m excited for that.

SR: Which one do you start?

PF: Brooklyn is Sunday. I go out there Saturday, so I’ll be back on the East Coast again this weekend. I’m also playing the after party for day 1 at Webster Hall with Gent and Jawns and Diplo.

SR: Then you have Moonrise Festival this weekend too

PF: Yup, so I play Sunday at the block party, finish my set, leave, and get on a train down to Baltimore for Moonrise Festival.

SR: Yeah I’m doing Philly block party Thursday and Friday then Moonrise Saturday and Sunday. Have you been to any of the block parties before?

PF: I’ve been, but this will be my first time playing. I went to the one in San Diego last year and the one in LA. So I’ve been going as a fan, but this year I actually get to play it. It’s definitely an awesome thing to play. Always good vibes.
