We Spoke To The Guy Who Made The World’s Best GIF

Remember when the Giphy CEO came out and said his favourite GIF ever was from a Skrillex show? The one with the two girls going absolutely haywire and contorting their faces like you’ve never seen before? Turns out it wasn’t a Skrillex show and the guy who captured it is actually Australian.

In an effort to find out exactly how it came about and how creator ‘Jeff’ captured it and of course the highs and lows we tracked him down and asked him a few burning questions.

SR: Hey Jeff, so your behind quite possibly the worlds best GIF. How does it feel?

J: It’s very surreal. To have the CEO of Giphy say that it’s the best gif he’s seen was insane. After posting it online, I thought I’d get a few laughs and then disappear – but it’s two years later and still shows up on Reddit, Buzzfeed and the rest of the internet. A few times at parties I’ve had it come up in conversation and someone has said ‘Dude, have you seen those two girls going absolutely off to Skrillex? You have to check it out!’ and I’m like ‘…Yeah I have, I kind of made it”.

SR: How did it come about? Can you give us the real story!

J: I was shooting video content during a festival tour in Australia. I was in the photo-pit trying to find punters who were really letting loose – And then I saw these two girls whose faces were just melting. I didn’t know a person’s face could do that. About a month later I completely forgot about it. It was only when I was dumping all the footage onto a hard-drive that I saw them again. I showed a few friends and posted it to Facebook – within 24 hours, every person on my feed was reposting it, and then it was everywhere. It wasn’t a Skrillex concert either, it was Hardwell!

SR: Are you worried this might be the pinnacle of your career or are you constantly stalking front rows at festivals for the next big gurner?

J: This is definitely the pinnacle of my career; it’s all downhill now. I direct music videos and edit commercials for a living and this 20-second clip has gotten more reach than any of them. You put your all into writing and directing an engaging narrative, but the people prefer munted girls at a festival – the internet is a strange place. I’m sure this gif will be played at my funeral one day.

SR: Did you make any money from the GIF?

J: Sadly no, I haven’t made a cent – but I’ve made a lot of people laugh so I guess that counts – kind of?

SR: What’s next with you and the business?

J: No more festival work for now, I’ve taken a hiatus to work in marketing and creative content. We have a music video with Nervo and Nicky Romero coming out next month and we recently won Rolling Stones’ ‘Music Video of the Year’ for Peking Duk’s ‘High – so life is good without rampaging through a photo-pit filming people on drugs.

SR: Thanks for your time Jeff, let’s clear this one up so you can get your well deserved accolades!

Here it is again, Jeffs clip in its most awesome glory!
