Newtown gets trial 3am Lockout

Sydney’s late night culture is taking hit after hit lately and it seems like more are on the way! Around 10 late night trading venues in Newtown met today and agree’d on self imposed 3am lockouts and no shots after midnight.

The accord was signed by places such as the Marlborough Hotel, Zanzibar and The Bank with only the Sly Fox holding out(which is good news for Sydney night life!) The 6 month trial begins on the 1st of September and only applies for Friday and Saturday nights with the intention to make sure Newtown does not become a last spot for drinks.

Crime statistics show that alcohol related assaults in Newtown have increased in the last 12 months (March 2014-March 2015) but the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research claim there is little evidence that the lockouts have shifted violence to these areas.

Have your say below, do you think this is a nail in the coffin for the area following the closure of The Imperial or do you think Sydney’s night life can and will bounce back?

More importantly than anything else is to continue to support the people still running parties, do not let these laws keep you down, keep culture alive in Sydney!
