Ten Walls axed from major festival line ups after homophobic rant

Update: Mysteryland Netherlands has added themselves to the list of those banishing Ten Walls announcing “At Mysteryland we celebrate love, we stimulate diversity and we give everybody the opportunity to be the person they want to be. The homophobic expressions by Ten Walls, who was booked for Mysteryland Netherlands this August, do not fit that vision. Therefor we have cancelled his gig at Mysteryland Netherlands, and will refrain from booking him at any upcoming Mysteryland editions around the world.”

Update: Sónar and Urban Art Forms festials have also dropped the producer, with Sónar releasing a statement proclaiming “Ten Walls will no longer be appearing at Sónar2015. Here’s to a diverse and enjoyable 2015.” Urban Art Forms similarly stated that “intolerance and discrimination” has no place at their event. Hell yes!

Fresh out of the oven, Lithuanian producer Ten Walls has been served some serious just deserts this week – being dropped from two major festivals following a homophobic rant on Facebook.

Creamfields and PITCH Festival (two fucking good gigs for any producer) released statements yesterday denouncing the artist – clearly taking zero tolerance standpoints against discrimination.

Amsterdam’s PITCH Festival, which this year features the likes of Flume, James Blake and Jon Hopkins had this to say on the matter, posting on their Facebook;

“In light of recent comments made by Ten Walls on his Facebook regarding homosexuality, we have decided to cancel Ten Walls’ show at PITCH festival. We want to make very clear that PITCH is a festival for everyone, and we are against any form of discrimination whatsoever, on and off our festivalsite. Comments like these are so far from our beliefs that it wouldn’t make any sense to have this act playing our festival.”

UK megafest Creamfields – which this year is toting The Chemical Brothers and Knife Party amongst others – was also swift to can him from the line up.

“Whilst we respect freedom of speech, we find his defamatory and prejudiced comments about the gay community extremely offensive and feel that this is not in line with the spirit of Creamfields or an opinion that we support.”

Their statement continued;

“Creamfields is celebrated for being a festival that welcomes all and we have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to hate of any kind. Everyone who attends our shows should feel welcome and safe. Comments like this, coming from one of the artists contradicts our festival ethos.”

All of us here at Stoney Roads believe the festivals should be commended for their swift and admirable reaction to Ten Walls’ behaviour.

The rant in question appeared on the producer’s Facebook page last Wednesday, and can only really be described as unbelievable bigotry. In the post Ten Walls compares homosexuality to paedophilia and states that in “the good 90s…these people of a different breed where fixed“.

The posts have since been removed – and replaced by this:

Naturally, many were quick to comment that he wasn’t really cancelling shows – rather shows no longer wished to associate with him. Many also commented that this is likely the end of his career. We’re cool with it.

Ten Walls was also scheduled to perform at Sónar Festival, Kappa Futurfestival, HARD Summer, Sonus Festival and Mysteryland.
