How Howling is Stealing the Night

Dance music’s latest super group doesn’t come from the EDM main stage, wear masks, or throw cake. Formed by two underground legends, Howling brings an eloquent blend of live-fused techno for deep experience fit for the club. Cutting straight to the chase, their debut album ‘Sacred Ground’ is nothing short of a masterpiece.

The fusion of Âme’s Frank Wiedemann and Ry X began some time ago with a brief showing on Dixon’s Innervisions in 2012. Blending LA-style writing with a Berlin underground authenticity, the two have inadvertently paved the way for alternative techno is a subtle 13-track LP.

After chatting with Ry from his current location in LA, 1/2 of Howling told us the story behind what seemed meant to be. Meeting as friends both ‘inherently needed a shift’ from successful projects

‘We make music honestly, don’t follow any trends… it really stuck when once n the booth at Berghain Dixon looked at me a said ‘You know, we changed house music forever.”

As part of the crew that truly did change house with a form of deep that took underground to new level. Innervisions and the Berlin squad has most definitely prompted a cultural shifts that offers more than just black apparel. Inputting in the way of mic time and studio prowess, the two halves of Howling have seen their fare share of involvement on more than one underground hit.

As part of the new project, Frank and Ry are admittedly ‘excited to branch out of deep house’ and into the live space. As the growth of EDM brings more boredom to the decks, true creators are keeping it interesting with hybrid experience connecting a live band feel without loosing the vibe of a dark club.

“People are getting sick of Djs behind the booth.”

Following in the steps of innovators like Nick Jaar and his Darkside project, Howling isn’t far behind. Lost in a mess of keyboard wires, electric bass, and full drums the stage realization of the Howling is a subtle interpretation of perfectly crafted analog house music.

About as spontaneous as their new group’s conception, their next steps are a mystery yet to be unveiled. With a decent summer lineup up touring Europe’s top festivals, Howling made an impact in their debut tunes just out this May.

“We don’t have expectations… others expect us to make more music.”

Their single ‘Stole The Night’ definitely showcases a calm side of house music that was long forgotten under the era of heavy bass introduced with dubstep. The key still lies within the low end, but inching harmonies outweigh massive drops in today’s underground dance landscape.

We’re definitely tracking the Howling on their expected rise through the ranks of Chicago’s dance writers and Brooklyn’s warehouse aristocracy. Be sure to keep your ears out for a gig nearby, because this dance duo is a rare sighting.
