Here’s How Soundcloud Plans To Pay 20,000 Independent Labels

Finally some good news from camp Soundcloud with an official statement outlining a deal between the streaming service and Merlin who currently represent around 20,000 independent labels.

Although Sony and Columbia have begun pulling their major artists wares from the service and Mixcloud offering up an export tool from Soundcloud this is a seriously positive step for the innovative platform.

The deal will mean indies such as Domino, Warp Records, Ninja Tune, Armada Music, PIAS and more will begin to receive royalties from a particular service dubbed ‘On Soundcloud’ which allows Merlin to advertise around certain tracks and take any revenue derived from it.

Soundcloud seem overjoyed with the result telling users via an official statement;

The indie community has always been at the heart of SoundCloud, and our deal with Merlin is another way for us to further support the independent community by opening a new source of revenue for them. – Soundcloud

So far ‘On Soundcloud’ has paid out $2,000,000 to over 100 partners including labels and musicians and will continue to grow with more support.

Hopefully this will also incentivise Soundcloud to return to its roots and help foster and curate the community as a whole.
