Australians Are Still Using the Dark Web To Buy Illegal Drugs

An investigation by news.com.au has uncovered the consistent use of dark web sites such as Agora to purchase drugs by Australians with one particular dealer thought to be selling up to $824,266 worth of narcotics in a month.

While it was already know that Australians had figured out how to access dark web sites such as the now defunct Silk Road not much was known publicly about its use, what it sold and how much potential revenue it was generating for online drug dealers.

What the investigation uncovered by data mining for a 7-day period on Australian sellers;

– Roughly 9000 individual listings of drugs
– methamphetamines, cocaine and speed were the most readily available class of drugs
– Total inventory over the week was worth $2.5 million, with an average listing price of $1191
– Ecstasy and cannabis were the next most available drugs
– New sellers constantly enter the market with the top tier able to offload an estimated $800,000 each month
– One in four listings are for heroin and DMT are from Australian sellers

The most surprising result was the estimated total income for Australia’s top dealer “TheProfessionals” who is said to be generating up to $3.3 million worth of revenue in a month.

The site runs using bitcoins and accessed via encrypted browsers making it hard but Australian police confirm that there is nothing legal about the process and the usual fines and potential jail time remain the same with a spokesperson saying;

“The NSW Police Force is aware of this website and others to facilitate illegal activity, including the supply of illicit drugs, and has a number of strategies in place,”
