Summer Horizons with Hector

With the Ibiza season just around the corner, Europe’s finest techno and house selectors are preparing for the craziness that is the summer. As slew of leading labels run the circuit, bouncing around from showcase to festival, the underground nightlife scene is dominated by tight knit crew made up of the titans of dance. Mexican transplant turned Berlin local is one of such titans. Well versed alongside Loco Dice’s Desolat crew, this Dj and producer has been around the block more than a few times with the releases to prove it. Before heading to Australia, we chatted with Hector about his days behind the counter and black clothes.

After a humble start behind the counter at Phonica Records, Hector learned the ropes of the industry from brick and mortar vinyl sales to digital distribution. The records store and label eventually led to a break but not before he put in a bit of sweat on the sales floor. Understanding the game, gave him the leg up needed to excel in the world of underground house.

‘Releasing vinyl is really a risk…. it’s all about the research. I know with vinyl how many to press, where it goes, etc. Every release has sold out.’

After joining the leading Loco team, Hector’s productions flourished with release on many of the leading labels across Europe. Already on the roster of 20/20 Visions, Mobilee, Tsuba and more, Hector is preparing to Matt Tolfrey on the iconic version of Fabric in their 81st delivery. Staying true to his root he continues to push wax with a forthcoming press on tastemaker label Underground Quality.

Like most underground producers, it was natural for Hector to migrate to Berlin. Using the dark clubs as a test ground, he hibernates in the studio during the winter before letting loose a season of works during the summer.

‘Pro Tip: To get into Berghain wear all black. I’m colorblind so I go straight to it.’

Admitting that underground techno is in the streets, the hip mecca proves to be alive and well with new and old talent rubbing shoulders in the iconic clubs. Though it gets quiet for the cold winter, the warm weather makes the streets upbeat.

With all of the right ingredients, Hectors has most definitely created a solid following in all the right ways. Proving that vinyl still holds it’s own, it’s easy to see that most of his followers have come through passionate music fans rather than social crazed click holes. Selling out vinyl is just on of his knacks, because a full gig schedule and forthcoming Aussie tour prove that wax pays.

Heading out of the productive winter production season, Hector teases records on Moan (with Gel Abril), Decay, Tsuba, and Ovum. If the stellar lineup of affiliated imprints doesn’t attract you, be sure to check him out landing in Australia and beyond over the next months.
