Native Instruments Drop ‘Stems’, May Change How We Purchase Music

Native Instruments aren’t fond of just sitting around twiddling thumbs and knobs and instead have debut’d a new music format to one up the mp3.

Dubbed ‘Stems’ the software and hardware company is set to introduce the multi-track format that breaks up the original file intro four isolated parts; bass, drum, percussion and vocal.

Aside from the obvious ability to then bootleg, mashup or remix a track easier when playing the format will also create a premium on particular parts of the file. Take for instance a vocal, it’s a much sort after thing, instead of purchasing the entire song for $0.99c on Beatport you can nab it for $5.

Not only does this create additional revenue channels for an artist but with its Traktor compatibility will mean live editing like nothing we’ve seen before.

So far Beatport, Juno and Traxsource have agreed to sell the format but it’s more than likely other retailers will jump on-board.

Now… about call your new song with someone else’s vocal an original :/
