Odesza’s Path To No Sleep

Self made over the past couple of years, the two-man band Odezsza was born out of chance like many dance projects these days. Behind the decks with drum pads galore, this live hybrid experience is perfect blend of harmony and raw dance. As they head into a Miami as prime-slotted party hosts, we chatted with them about the quick road up.

What began as a portfolio piece, Harrison and Clay found dance in a college dorm room. Armed with sample triggers and an ear for groove, their passion for art is ever present in their sound. Graphic designer by trade, Harrison took care of all visuals while joining Clay in the studio for a true DIY beginning. As a classic story of an internet-born act, their downtempo dance was quickly picked up in post-dubstep/electro scene yearning for a more refined production. Just far away from pop to be picked up by the underground, though overlapping indie to catch the ear of the critics Odesza was a blog-stoked fire just waiting to explode.

‘They Hypem grind let us to reach various different fan-bases leading to the nudge we needed for gigs’

After a couple of remix gigs under the wing of the cult-followed Pretty Lights phenom, the boy had a fan base just ready to see what they were made of. After Zhu broke the internet with one the quickest and most mysterious breaks in dance, who did he pick to remix his first hit? Odesza’s spark ignited just in time for their second album ‘In Return’ solidifying their spot as genre bridging group paving the way for electronic production.

Firmly planted in a world of influence, the two pride themselves in a melodic influence both visually and through audio. One quick look at any art associated with the band and you’ll understand the sound. On stage they’re more than just a dance duo. Touring an infectious live set, their bass-heavy vibe offers a futuristic dance sound that and indie popper gan get down. When speaking with Harrison it’s easy to make the connection that this guy’s artist authenticity is much different hoards of Ableton junkies looks for a quick fix. The connection of classic theory with trending dance cuts offers a warm and contagious sound that can only be Odesza.

‘Produce as much project as you can and look for a great outlets. Focus on the end product while being conscious of everything around you.’

Though a constant buzz and sold out album tour keeps them on the road they’re always creating. Heading into Miami, Odesza are taking over the luxurious Delano South Beach for intimate night with the homies. For another installment of their No Sleep events, there’s no better place than a festival afterparty the slow it down and stay up all night. Sharing the decks with RAC, Jason Bently, Lane 8, and Autograf this Ultra Official event will be a hot mess of vibez galore.
