Instagram deleted millions of fake accounts. Who lost the most?

As you may have already heard, Instagram just deleted millions and millions of fake accounts and spammers. Most of us don’t really care, or are a little relieved knowing that there’ll be less spam on Instagram.

For some, namely big time celebrities, these losses led to some immense cuts in their social media numbers.

Someone has put together a little graph of the biggest losses to celebrity followings. This is just the top 15:

There’s some pretty big losses. Just Bieber lost 3.5 million, Akon lost nearly 2.5 million followers, plummeting from 4.3 million down to a measly 1.9 million. Poor old P Diddy lost nearly a quarter of his followers, falling from 4.6 million down to a disgraceful 3.6 million.

It’s also been upsetting to teenagers with thousands of followers, who may not have realised that many of them are fake accounts. They’re predominantly acquired by using tonnes of hashtags, which are picked up by bots, and they eventually acquire tens of thousands of fake followers and fake likes. Personally, I don’t have such issues, as I boast an impressive 106 followers. I think I had 107 yesterday but that’s probably unrelated.

How many did you lose?
