Skream takes on The Smiths…again?!

That Skream is a quirky motherfucker. First he peed in plastic bag on the London Eye. Now he’s making a habit of taking on alt-rock (original emo) band The Smiths.

Yep, death threats aren’t enough to sway this bass bad-boy, who today released a ‘remix’ of Smiths hit ‘There is a light that never goes out’ with vocals by a Smiths cover band lead signer. Originally remixing favourite ‘This Charming Man’ to much criticism – the strange ballads have got some music fans lighting pitchforks, some reaching for the bong and some simply asking…why?

Before we open up for discussion – have a listen.

As a platform who’ve often been interested in the argument of appropriate remixing (read rant here), we’ve got a few enquiries.

1. As proprietors of acoustic acoustic acoustic – why choose the Smiths?

In Skream’s own words;

Let me explain my reason behind this cover please.

Whenever I play in Manchester I end my set with a big Manchester record and last Friday being my return to Store Street I needed a track I hadnt used before..I’ve played all the obvious ones ‘Love WIll Tear Us Apart’ New Order, Stone Roses etc etc….

So I picked this track but didn’t just want to play the original..

Look out classic British alt-rock everywhere – Skream’s coming for ya.

2. Are Smiths fans going to find a way to castrate Skream?

Here are some comments verbatim;

‘WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING’

‘You cannot play with the perfection of the original – poor and lacks imagination’

‘way to butcher a classic’

‘fuck me, you’ve ruined a beautiful record’

And that’s just from the people who listened to the Smiths and know how to use the internet.

3. Is this even a remix?

With the first Smiths cover held under the title of ‘Skream’s Heart-Wrenching Ballad’s Remix’, the down-tempo piano-heavy composition of these ‘remixes’ have got us wondering if they actually are.

We don’t mean to sound simple but…where’s the bass? This is Skream we’re talking about. Where’s my motherfucking drop?

Again we’re reminded of the contentious issue that is remixing classic tracks. As one of the biggest singles to pull on the heartstrings of disenfranchised British youths – we wonder if the feels can be appropriated for a new generation, and if they should?

Again weighing in – these were Skream’s final words on the subject;

‘ wasnt gonna upload it but theres been demand from the people who were there Friday to hear it again and from people who wanna hear it from a video clip I uploaded..

Anyway..Here it is….And to all the Smiths fans please..No more death threats looooool’

Looooool indeed, Skream. Looooooool indeed.
