We Need Dancing Pedestrian Lights In Australia!

Jaywalking, we all do it but don’t really think much of it even if it brings us one step closer to well, serious injury or DEATH! Cue dancing pedestrian lights that have been created by Daimler AG, the boffins behind the tech in Mercedes and Smart Cars.

Although not in any form to be rolled out in the world and more in the promo-marketing stage the company does put a good foot forward in aiming to reduce people jumping between cars to cross the road instead waiting for that bad boy to turn from red to green.

In an effort to crunch the numbers Daimler AG set up at a busy intersection in Lisbon, Portugal with an interactive pedestrian light that relayed real time dancing movements from a booth.

The result? A whopping 81% of pedestrians stopping and heeding the lights (while having a boogie) and avoid getting hit by cars or bikes! A spokesperson of Daimler AG told the LA Times;

“These traffic lights were connected to a dancing booth where people could choose from five songs and slip into the role of the red man as soon as the light switched from green to red. Movements were captured via Kinect technology and brought to the traffic light in real-time with the help of a tailor-made software.”

Maybe in the future there wouldn’t be a need for a booth but hundreds of pre-set dancing moves that funky little red dude could bust out when waiting for his green buddy to take over. Throw in some 8-bit techno and we’re sold!

The future seems bright.
