Diplo’s “Techno” with Yellow Claw and Waka Flocka Flame: Hypocrite much?

Drugs and dance music have been the talk of the town lately for the dance music industry. The two main dance music and drug topics of the summer were Diplo’s Mad Decent Block Party and the Electric Zoo PSA video. Earlier in August, an unfortunate incident occurred when a concert goer died at Mad Decent Block Party in Maryland. If you remember correctly, extra precautions were then put in effect for the remaining block party events. Secondly, the PSA video from Electric Zoo had a lot of buzz. We witnessed a concert goer on MDMA who basically missed the entire show because he was to engulfed in drugs and made himself look like a crazy fool in front of a cute girl. In the end, we were never told what the outcome was for the concertgoer, but we can all agree that that sweat drenched kid really needed water from a camelbak.

Now, a new drug PSA video has surfaced, and not one you would expect. We now introduce you to “Techno,” a hardstyle, trap track produced by Yellow Claw, Diplo, and LNY TNZ ft. Waka Flocka Flame. Released last month, the track now is accompanied by a very powerful drug PSA music video.

Watch it here:

The video starts off by showing us the behind the scene process of the production of MDMA and how it is passed along by drug dealers. The final step in the process is reaching a 20-something year old girl whom buys the pills at a club and learns the hard way that “drugs are not worth the risk.”

Although we do applaud Diplo (and his PR crew) for being responsible, enlightening us with a powerful, positive message, and addressing the risk of drugs and why it’s not worth the risk, but we do chuckle a little about how Diplo is being hypocritical. Earlier in the year, Diplo produced a track for versace rapper RiFF RaFF called “Kokayne” which is basically a coke lullaby expressing RiFF RaFF’s need nee and want for cocaine and how it brings his life enjoyment. Not only that, having Waka Flocka Flame on the track was a poor choice for this drug PSA. Having lyrics such as “pocket full of molly, sellin pounds out the window” in the track “Breakfast” with Gucci Mane seems to give the opposite message of “Techno.” Diplo’s own song, “Pick Your Poison,” produced in 2011,  “Face down in this shit, promise I will never quit.”

Diplo banned the popular dance music accessory “kandi” earlier in the year to attempt to resolve the drug issues that occur at shows claiming that it “promotes drug use.” That’s fine and all, except that’s pretty hypocritical considering his music has drug references. If he really wanted to make a difference, he should pick a side and stay on it. If Diplo is so seriously against drug use, he would be taking steps to stop it instead of producing music that pro-drug use. If this video was produced by a sober DJ whom doesn’t do drugs or has but is now clean, the impact would have been more effective and not viewed hypocritical.
