What Does a Nine Foot 909 Drum Machine Look Like?

It seems like most days we dream of a giant drum machine to paddle away on with that dream finally realised by four Brits who have constructed a huge Roland TR-909 replica.

Not only does the nine foot version of the classic drum machine look the goods but it works too with the lads, Brendan McCarthy, Sam Healy, Dave Hartmann and James Rutherford piling into the guts of it a series of drum pads, wiring, one TD-12 and brand spanking new Roland TR-8 to make the beast come to life!

Most of the process is covered in their tumblr with the project kicking off in early June with a few pics below as well as an early soundcheck – wild!

Although we can’t see this being handled by a single person aside from towering basketball player Shaq who recently kicked off his own DJ career it’s still a wildly cool re-imagining of something that was originally designed to be small, compact and powerful.

Foaming at the mouth for more kooky analogue stuff? Get into our vintage synth series that takes a look at the Steiner Parker Synthacon, Con Brio ADS Family, Polivoks and Linn LM-1 & Linndrum.

Better still, an early soundcheck of the prototype.
