See you on the other side: Darkside Calls it Quits

Update: Watch Darkside live at Dimensions festival for one of their last performances ever. Pro-tip, lower the quality if your in Australia. Stream it here.

In a shocking move that will no doubt distress lovers of bass and euphoric hand-waving the world over, Dave Harrington and Nico Jaar have announced the end of their collaboration as Darkside. While the pair will have – and will continue to – made music together for years (they began their musical relationship at Brown University and Haarrington is part of Jaar’s live band,) we’ll no longer be hearing anything from ‘Psychic’ or other Darkside recordings. After touring together for a year, the two will be taking time to work on their solo ventures.

Making the announcement on their Twitter, the two were short and sweet – ripping the bandaid off our bass-yearning souls.

After the unprecedented popularity of their ‘Daftside’ remix series ‘Random Access Memories Memories’, in which they took Daft Punk’s decent (but let’s be real – overplayed to a point of eye-stabbing obnoxiousness) and turned it into a multi-instrumental transpose-y strip-tease of a release. Listen to it’s saucy awesomeness below.

Arguments suggest that the marriage of the talents of mad-axer Harrington and chocolate-voiced Jaar made a notable dent in the contemporary dance music landscape. Conceiving a sound unheard of by many with their 2013 ‘Psychic’ release, the style that was simultaneously ‘ol West’ and ‘Brooklyn underground’ confused many an eardrum. Joined with the dark simplicity of their live performance made for a genre which transcended all others.

Doused in smoke and an almost anxious orange glow – I was lucky enough to catch them at last months Splendour in the Grass. Scrumming on the previous Nina Las Vegas crowd – my friend and I pushed past our munting brothers and sisters and scored a mint front row spot. Minutes into ‘Paper Trails’, a baseball-shirt wearing moron attempted to get on the shoulders of a poor punter behind us. The beyond-chilled crowd reacted with disdain – and the beauty of a dickhead free crowd was soon ensued. One get’s the vibe that only chilled homeys appreciate Darkside – and that fuckin’ rules.

Whilst both continued to smash it solo during their time as Darkside (check out Harrington’s solo release here and Nico’s hectic boiler room set ">here), we’re sad that we’ll not see any more of Darkside as its own thing. As a parting gift to their avid fans, the two have left two tracks that were created during the ‘Psychic’ recording sessions. Grab a listen below.
