Ms Dockville Festival Review – The ‘Gate To The World’

On a rainy summer weekend in Hamburg, we sent our German Stoney Roads correspondent Mazde to experience one of Europe’s most exciting three day festivals, MS Dockville. Loaded with camping gear and one heck of a line up that included the well place producer of the year awards Flume and Chet Faker, this is what went down;

“On a dike in the middle of Hamburg the MS Dockville festival takes place every summer, for the eighth consecutive year. Next to the city’s famous harbour from where Germany imports and exports most of it’s goods, (hence the name): “gate to the world”, more than 25,000 electronic-, alternative- and indie- fans set up camp and enjoyed three days of awesomeness, strong enough to break temporal rain and coldness.

My experience was amazing, catching acts including Flume, Chet faker, Flic Flac, RY X, SOHN, Shlohmo and Dillon. With such a wide diversity of styles, the experience signified an eclectic array of ear drum offerings that didn’t typecast the festival under any category of music. A massive total of over 140 artist was certainly a forerunning event as well as an opportunity for rather unknown acts to prove themselves in front of a large audience.

Thanks to the “MS Artville” festival prior to the music festival, the area itself is very artistically arranged and decorated, which gives it a very unique feeling. For genuine festival-visitors it was also possible to stay on one of two campsites.

The whole Weekend was an extraordinary experience and I advise everyone to plan ahead for next years instalment of MS Dockville. It takes place from the 14th- 16th August, advance booking starts in October.”

The three highlights of my MS Dockville festival experience were

1. Seeing flume live was definitely one of the highlights… at no other stage during the whole festival the people danced as extensively as when Flume smashed his tracks
2. The combination of art and music made everything even more spectacular
3. Although it was raining most of the time everyone gave their best to break the cold and the rain
