Way back in March, Wave Racer teased us all by sneaking an demo of Basenji’s unreleased single “Heirloom” into a Diplo and Friends playlist.

In the months that have passed, the 21-year-old Sydneysider has signed with Future Classic, racked up more than a million plays on Soundcloud and filled dancefloors at CIRCO, Vivid Festival, Splendour in the Grass and more.

Finally, today sees the official release of Basenji’s “Heirloom,” available for free on Future Classic’s Soundcloud. It’s our first taste of what’s to come from his forthcoming EP, set to be released later this year.

The track starts with a mid-tempo groove, before a cheerfully high-pitched melody kicks in. It’s true to form for the young producer, who’s been hard at work developing a signature style. The track really keeps you on your toes, waxing and waning its way through an impressively diverse set of instruments and layers. We’re taken from angelic harps to a rumbling bass, from frantic synth to hyperactive claps, and everything in between.

It’s been an insane ride so far for the young producer, and there seems to be no sign of him slowing down any time soon. He’s just announced a string of headlining tour dates, and will be playing alongside the likes of Dillon Francis, Action Bronson, Rüfüs, Peking Duk at more at a seriously anticipated festival later in the year.
