After a mysterious Aphex Twin blimp appeared over London earlier this month before Warp Records officially announced his first record in 13 years, it has come to the attention of fans that four tunes off SYRO have been around – and played – for years.
Although a SoundCloud account run by a “Richrud D. Jomes” claimed to be streaming all the tunes already (don’t think so mate), in a forthcoming interview with Fader, Richard D. James revealed that the oldest material on the album is actually six or seven years old, and it seems that two of the songs on on the LP have already been debuted live, in some form.
Aphex Twin allegedly performed ‘4 bit 9d api+e+6’ at an ATP performance in 2007, while ‘2010 XMAS_EveT10 (thanaton3 mix)’ was performed live in 2010 (here as ‘Metz’); the latter has been issued a copyright claim by Warp, suggesting it’s the real thing. Similarly, lead track ‘minipops 67 [120.2][source field mix]’ has circulated previously as “the Manchester track,” while ‘PAPAT4 [155][pineal mix]’ may well be the track at 7:44 from " target="_blank">this Singapore performance.
Take a listen below.
The album will be released on September 22/23, on triple-vinyl, CD and digital formats via Warp, and what’s even better, he also said this won’t be his last album since he’s now “kicked into gear” regarding new music. Ahh!!
