It’s not only Destructo who has a problem with ‘kandi‘ after Major Lazer frontman Diplo laid down a similar ban on the bracelet culture after an unfortunate death at one of the earlier Mad Decent Block Parties.
Hitting his socials he outlined the reasoning behind removing kandi from all future Mad Decent parties pointing rather subtly to drugs as the cause;
i don’t got nothing but love 4 u and your kandi i just want to take steps to make sure everyone is there 100% for the music. not other stuff

There has been expected backlash as there is with most new rules, especially one that might alienate a portion of fans who genuinely come along to enjoy the show and the music.
Why Kandi? Although its ethos is quite harmless and promotes PLUR – Peace, Love, Unity and Respect as well as it literally being kids trading homemade kandi, it’s origins are thought to lay within drug dealing with sellers commonly wearing the arm-wear in an effort to draw in potential clients. Part of the charm of kandi is muzzing out and making buddies or entertaining people with combined light shows (see below) or swapping ‘rave’ stories.
Even with this being an outdated theory and possibly an overreact, we feel like Diplo of all people would have a better understanding than most of his users with rather constant use of social media, industry insiders and connection to the people giving him a wider understanding of the issue on hand versus say, a politician.
Stranger still, this kandi culture in Australia does not exist yet we still enjoy music. Weird huh?
