WTF? Alesso Signs Track to Rick Rubins Def Jam Records

In a slightly confusing move, Alesso’s latest track “Tear The Roof Up” has been signed to Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons highly Hip-Hop skewed label Def Jam Recordings.

The play further blurs the lines between genre driven homes for music and the worlds of rap and electronic. More worrying is the history of a label who’s expansive discography is littered with important releases from Hip Hop veterans such as Warren G, Nas, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys and more… now releasing what could be seen as popular music and a big leap away from their usual fodder.

It’s not as if the track from the Swedish producer is anything other than big, loud and crunching festival sounds that’d fit perfectly into a mainstage set or commercial radio. At the least you can’t knock a dude for making music and getting paid fat bills for it.

Regardless Zane Lowe who premiered the track was convinced it was “monstrous” adding live on air “I didn’t make it to Coachella this year but I was…streaming it like so many millions of people from around the world…I clicked on Alesso’s set and he started his set with this song. It was the most ridiculous, most unifying response from about 20,000 people streaming out of this huge aircraft hanger whilst the sun was beaming down on his face and I was like ‘This is what songs like this are designed to do’.”
