Sophie – Lemonade

Sophie is back to fill that gaping candy mutated dance pop hole left in our lives. His latest release ‘Lemonade’ takes off right where ‘Bipp’ (undoubtedly one of the best tracks of 2013) and ‘Elle’ left us – teetering on the edge of hysteria through a carefully constructed hypnotic boiling crescendo of heavily diffused, yet subtle layers.

Although there’s similar sounds emerging from the polarising PC Music label (whose stable GFOTY, Hannah Diamond and A.G Cook)  no-one quite delves into the darker side of bubblegum pop like Sophie. The contrast between the mesmerising synths and pitched out vocals is perfectly executed as the track radically switches beats from being a pop-and-lock head nodder to a skitzed up trance assault.

It only clocks in at 2 minutes – but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. The cheeky, yet addictively catchy lyrics distract the listener from the artistry at work. Behind the scenes Sophie is carving out a layered piece that doesn’t rely on gimmicky percussion – just deep bassy synths and an insane K-Pop sensibility. We’re excited to hear what he has stored up his sleeve – including work with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Sophie’s 12″ featuring “Lemonade” and “Hard” is set for an August 4 release via Glasgow outfit Numbers.
