Kimbra solicits help of FlyLo, Thundercat and more in attempt to save average album

[UPDATE: Listen to two other songs from The Golden Echo new album ">here and ">here.Might not be as bad as ’90s Music’, but still questionable in quality.]

New Zealand pop-lady Kimbra has called on a whole band of collaborators to save one seriously questionable new album offering.

Suffering from an ongoing case of ‘always featuring, never a star’ – Kimbra is best known for her contributions to the worldwide hit Gotye’s ‘Somebody I Used to Know’ and Miami Horror’s summery smash ‘I Look to You’.

Titled ‘The Golden Echo’ and produced by Rich Costey (the man behind albums from Foster the People, Sigur Ros and Santigold), Kimbra is calling upon an expansive mate patrol including Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth, ex-Mars Volta member Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, John Legend, Bilal and Silverchair’s Daniel Johns.

Seems like a massive attempt to give an average album some outsourced gravitas? Probably because it is. Despite the huge crew she’s compiled, what seems imminent is a total electronic album fail.

Why do we think this? Well first you’ll just have to have a listen/watch of the video for track ’90’s Music’ released last week… We’ll check in after.

Feeling slightly embarrassed? So are we.

We think you’ll agree, this song sucks. And yeah, yeah, yeah, we understand she’s being ‘experimental’ with electronic music but seriously – this Grimes/Miley Cyrus/Gwen Stefani styled fiasco is unpleasant to listen to and watch. She doesn’t pull off electronic. She doesn’t pull of ‘kooky’. The track doesn’t flow, feels awkward and doesn’t have anything genuine to offer.

The major disappointment in all of this is that we actually think that Kimbra is an incredibly skilled vocalist. We don’t know who’s encouraging her to dabble in this bastardising of dance music but we think she should probably fire them, pronto.

Ah well, if anyone can help her out it’s FlyLo – do your best big dog!
