Deep In The City You’re Safer At Night

Our photo dude Oliver recently made the trip from down under to the city that never sleeps. When in Gotham there is really only one guy that truly embodies the late nights and dirty streets that line New York and its boroughs. Without a doubt we had to link with the darkest deep house in the city. Luca Venezia is that dude you’re almost guaranteed to run into when out in Brooklyn. A local legend and global bass slinger, he gained international notoriety for his game-changing label Trouble & Bass and rock steady alter ego Drop The Lime.

Known for seeking out musical challenges, the NY Vamp/producer has switched it up with the latest label venture Safer A Night. Centered on a tight knit city crew and Luca’s deep alias Curses, the versatile group are building a discography highlighting the darker points of house and techno.

Sporting an eclectic blend, Curses is joined by regulars Cranks, Total Fitness, DKDS, and Abu Ashley to form the inter circle. With less than a year under their belt, 4 unique releases, and support from near and far, Safer At Night Is spinning late and we are still listening.

The latest release comes as another BK highlight with Walker & Royce’s latest tune premiered on THUMP. In a crew with Brooklyn in their veins, there’s no shortage of street cred across the group. Seen backstage in the areas most venues mingling with touring friends, at first site you can tell the group is deep into dance. After solidifying the title as bass champions of Brooklyn, no one passes through the city without crossing Curses’ shadow.

Curses

Label boss and full-time Vampire, Curses has been around the block more than once. Pioneering a style of his own, Luca has never been afraid to step outside the boundaries of popular dance. Maybe it wasn’t a challenge anymore, maybe it was just time for a change but the Brooklyn bad ass made a shift with his new deep alias of Curses. With a slew of mixes and original in just over a year, Curses is trailblazing once again with ‘New Gotham House‘.

Cranks

No stranger to the New York label-scene, Cranks has been actively involved as Trouble & Bass took over the US bass scene. Hosting much of the crew down south at his former VA party Brain Drain, it seemed only right that the young producer found himself in the heart of Brooklyn hanging with the vamp squad. Moving into his producer prime, a few worthy club-edits have us waiting for more from the Cranks disco-dance vibe. Nothing out on the imprint yet, but we can bet something is already in the works.

Total Fitness

This NY-local draws influences from the best place possible: his parents’ vinyl collection. There’s no doubt his taste is right with appearances at the city’s techno hotspots Verboten, Output, and Lebain. On the production-side his S.A.N. debut ‘Fingerbox E.P‘ sports a driving dance floor push while holding the late-night vibe. Seasoned by plenty of Brooklyn sunrises, Total Fitness has plenty of techno prowess to represent BK on the international stage.

DKDS

Most of the time family is fun to be around but not the type you bring to the club. Two techno cousins going by the name DKDS, not only enjoy the family company but are quite keen to lock themselves in a cramped studio for hours on end. Debuting on Trouble & Bass, the Seattle/NYC-bred duo is quickly coining an underground sound fit for big bass and dark nights. Their ‘Deep Black EP‘ on Safer At Night takes a melodic keyed A-side and driving techno B-side to form a club-fit blend of ominous deep production.

Abu Ashley

Egyptian transplant, Brooklyn artist, and habibi techno producer Abu Ashley, has a dark future ahead, but dark is the best way. Previewing a single recent original on Parka, we can expect more as the summer heat invades. Integrating Arabic drum-based roots, his unique take on tribal house revitalizes a worn genre. We can’t tell you what’s next from the mysterious house-head but we think you should keep watch.
