Visionquest Summer Preview with Ryan Crosson

There are those in this small industry we call electronic music that naturally develop the art. Without trying, house music flows through these artist’s veins. Products of an audio revolution, particles of transition, organic American producers form a harmony between generations of homegrown dance. From techno’s roots the Visionquest team calls Detroit their home with the world as their canvas. The label and dj group resides on the road, often citing hot spots like Berlin and London to lay their head. Even though Visionquest may have moved past their time in the studio, the label has a bright future releasing deep techno that can’t be ignored.

We talked with Ryan Crosson about what to expect from the label this summer. Kicking off by hosting their own stage at Mysteryland USA, the forward-thinking techno producers have a full lineup for the next few months. With a recent release by Rework, and much more to coming during the warm months, if your going to spend money on music it should be with Visionquest.

Label-wise, Visionquest has had a few choice releases including a massive album from Rework. Visionquest has been known to break new artists by taking a chance. What can we expect throughout the summer months with Visionquest.

After the Rework month of May where we release a single and their album “You Play” we will continue with two more releases on Visionquest from Lee Curtiss and then from Benoit & Sergio.  We will also have two various artist EPs on Visionquest Special Edition featuring Uner, Cesar Merveille, Rework (again) and new artists Moreon & Baffa.  Moreon & Baffa are Venezuelan by birth but are currently living in Barcelona.  In addition to this first introduction on VQSE they will also have an EP with us on Visionquest in the September or October when we shift gears back to a more techno sound.

The group has a fair amount on the books for summer scheduling. As a group what are you looking forward to?

I’m really excited to go to Beirut with the guys and for a few of the festivals we have going on in Europe.  All will be completely new experiences for us.  Promoters are being a bit tight about what we can announce and what we can’t.  One thing I can announce is our double up with Lovebox in London.  We will be playing the festival during the day but will also host an after party at Oval Space, which will serve as a record release party for Benoit & Sergio.

Mysteryland is fittingly held this year at the old Woodstock grounds; Visionquest even hosts a stage for a day. How does it feel to see massive events like this knocking on the door of top US markets (and not terribly far from your hometown)?

Massive events are gaining ground in the States now that the whole EDM craze is in full swing.  But I think it’s completely separate to what is happening in Europe and I identify with it less.  In Europe you can play at a big festival and not one name on the lineup makes your cringe or question.  America is different because the markets aren’t the same and you have to mash up commercial dance music and underground.  I’m happy to some degree that larger events are happening Stateside and that combining commercial and underground will possibly lead to more underground artists playing in the future.  But I still don’t think the overall quality of music at most electronic festivals in the States will ever eclipse events in Europe.

Any Visionquest Ibiza plans for this summer?

Yes we have lots of things planned in coordination with Space and we have a few after-hours in the works with Rumors and one or two other spots.  When you’re on the island, keep your ears open and you’ll find us around a lot this summer.

What’s next from the studio for Visionquest? Any big music on the map you can speak of?

We are really proud to be releasing the Rework album at the end of May. In addition, Benoit & Sergio fans will not be disappointed by their upcoming EP in July.  Extremely playful, big jams.  As for Visinoquest specifically, we are in the middle of completely a 3 CD compilation.  The first two discs will be individual tracks, sort of like a best of from the first 3 years of the labels existence.  The third CD will be a mix from Shaun, Lee and myself that focuses on the more clubby side of the label.
