What do you get when you cross the Roland TR-808 with a Rubik’s Cube? A whole new way to waste the rest of your afternoon thats what.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Rubik’s Cube, Google’s project named the ‘Cube Lab‘ has brought together a selection of designers, artists and creative coders to create several reinterpretations of the classic puzzle. In the midst of all this we have stumbled across the 808 Cube,  which is all about making beats and man is it addictive.

“This experiment is a mash up of cultural icons popular in the 1980s, a spin on drum machine step sequencing, and a repurposing of the Rubik’s cube for rhythm exploration”, according to the site. Users can use the 808 Cube like a sequencer, “solving” the cube to introduce randomization into the sequence.

The programs developer stated that “there are a couple Easter eggs in the 808 Cube that I’ll release over the next few days”. First up – Drag and Drop One-Shot Samples. Watch the video below, it has a strangely addictive sample over the top… 808 Cube, 808 Cube.
