Feds propose scrapping of vital Aussie music media: What YOU can do

(First he ate all the strawberries, now Joe Hockey is coming for our media!)

Here at Stoney Roads, we love radio, our local and national media bros especially. We appreciate radio stations as the original toters of local music and the voice of communities everywhere – so to hear they’re being put at risk by the feds lights the passion of fury within us – and we need YOUR help.

Our local station and BFFs in general FBi Radio are an extremely important staple in the Sydney community – responsible for pumping tunes, upcoming and otherwise to the earbuds of the locals. Hell, in the last six months they’ve brought us international talent (such as this awesome premiere from Jamie xx and Four Tet) and given a much needed outlet for local talent. They run independently and care solely about the enjoyment of YOU, the listener. Ain’t no Kyle Sandilands-esque fuckery, they just love music and culture.

Unsurprisingly, Treasurer Joe Hockey and the rest of the libs didn’t exactly have this on their priority list when the Commission of Audit was released – with the suggestion that public radio funding should be scrapped (we assume in favour of war drones and Tony Abbott’s mass toupee fund). Considering the cray importance of radio – this would be pretty f*D.

As FBi breakfast radio host Georgia Hitch tells Stoney;

Community stations provide a voice to groups who may otherwise go unheard… FBi, in it’s dedication to Sydney music, arts and culture has allowed hundreds of people the chance to expose their talents and voice through their creative work, opportunities they wouldn’t have from the public broadcasters.’

With the federal government handing down it’s annual budget on Tuesday, we could see stations forced off air if the plan to cut funding goes ahead.

So what can you do?

It’s simple – get off dat fine ass and click HERE to shoot an email to Joe Hockey telling him you’re not cool with the goings on. It’s pre-written and makes you sound sexy and articulate – wahoooooo!

Time to stand up for our rights to a free and independent culture – music love FTW.
