Exclusive: Introducing LA MAR

La Mar Liveshot

Every now and then we come across a song that is beyond verbal description. A song that mould’s so perfectly together in every way that it becomes a chilling experience when listening. Once again- much too our excitement-  we have encountered one of these soulfully impacting tunes, in form of Sydney based duo LA MAR.

LA MAR, made up of long term musicians Dylan and Andrew,  have successfully encapsulated a soulful, atmospheric and vocally blissful sound that glows with originality, whilst  utilising some clear musical influence from the likes of D’Angelo, Classixx, James Blake and Thom Yorke.

We are thrilled to be premiering LA MAR’s single ‘Anchor’, which will be released on their debut self-titled EP come August this year. We caught up with the guys today to have a chat about the music, the name, and the influence ahead of releasing this absolute gem of a track.

Joe: Can you give me some background on the name La Mar? I’m an old fan of The Beautiful Girls who had a great song by that name, was that any influence?
Andrew and Dylan: Yeah kind of came about from living close to the sea all our lives and it being a place to chill out. Our music is an expression of that chilled out vibe. Yes, the beautiful girls was a reference of ours. Dylan was a big fan of this track.

J: How did you guys tee this project up? When did you first think “let’s make music”?
A+D: Christmas eve last year we were hanging out at Andrews place with friends. Pretty quickly it became a loose jam that went long into the night. At one point we a slurred the words to each other “ we should write a tune” and we actually followed it up with anchor being written in that first jam.

J: You both come from a more classical style of music- Dylan with folk music and previous band and Andrew with your history of playing in big bands- what was the sway to the electronic field?
A+D:  I (Andrew) have been creating electronic music for the last couple of years as a hobby along side studying Bio- Electrical engineering. The music bug quickly inflected him and changed direction, pulling out of Uni and into audio engineering with a focus on electronic production and synthesizers. Dylan was always a big fan of chilled out acoustic music and started getting into the James Blake/Chet Faker thing just before we met. the result is electronic production at a slow, soulful tempo. This seemed like an exciting concept that we got stuck into right away.

J: Who are you musical influences that we can possibly notice in ‘Anchor’? I can hear a very Chet Faker-esq meets Jamie xx vibe.
A+D: Nailed it. Chet, Jamie xx, James Blake, Classixx etc etc. we both listen to a lot of music and draw influence from all over the shop.

J: How do you guys feel about joining the fast progressing Australian music scene? It is a pretty good time to do say I’m it’s you agree!
A+D: Its exciting. Pumped to a part of something new like this.  Its motivating being part of a culture that is growing.

J: In your own words, can you let us all know what La Mar is all about?
A+D: It’s about taking the vibe that inspired us and making other people feel the same way.
