ZHU – Faded [Mind Of A Genius]

You know when you hear a tune and think to yourself, “who the fuck is this?!” Yeah, well, for the past couple of months people all around the globe have been scratching their heads trying to figure out who was behind an anonymous Outkast rework titled ‘Moves Like Ms. Jackson’, pulling guesses out of nowhere ranging from Duke Dumont to French Express to a collaboration between Disclosure and Outkast. A week after that our Burial/Trippy Turtle-esque badman uploaded an original track ‘Superfriends’, calling influence from the Gorillaz with synth funk, rough-and-ready 90’s hip hop bounce and pitched-down rap verses. It quickly went to the top of the Hype Machine chart, and within a few weeks the two jams accumulated a combined 500,000 plays without the artist even having an official moniker.

Well…guess no more! His name is ZHU, and he’s an LA-based vocalist/producer drawing sounds from various dance music genres – as you can probably already tell. Yesterday he came ‘public’ with his tune ‘Faded’, set for release on his own newly-formed label Mind Of A Genius (MOAG) later this year. It’s streaming below, and further shows his virtuoso skills with smoky midnight Italo disco, elastic garage keys, liquid falsetto and cunningly manipulated vocal production. High recommendations for this man.
