Watch: Jeff Mills First ever Red Bull Music Academy lecture

Taking a step back in time to 1998 we head to the Berlin Red Bull Music Academy where Detroit producer/DJ Jeff Mills took to the couch to present the first ever RBMA lecture.

Thanks to RBMA the highly insightful, now 16 year old clip has made its way onto the world wide web. Fascinatingly Mills had a huge influence over not only the audience but on the academy itself, in their own words:

“we didn’t quite have everything perfected at the Academy, but after sitting down with the techno legend, we got the sense we were on to something.” – RBMA

Spanning 70 minutes, Jeff Mills, one of the founding fathers of techno, begins by discussing a few of the the grinds of international DJ stardom including lonely travels and washing your undies in the sink, then to go onto how he learned the craft of mixing, his life on the road, the origins of Underground Resistance, the philosophy underlying minimal techno and much more before taking questions from the audience.

Looking back, the then 35 year old Mills definitely set the benchmark for the lecture couch as a place where legends are able to share their own bits of of humour, struggle and insight. Watch in full below and apply for Red Bull Music Academy Tokyo now.
