M.I.A and the $16.6 Million Dollar Middle Finger

There’s nothing cheap and cheeky about flicking 167 million people ‘the bird’ on TV at the Superbowl, with the NFL chasing a massive bill from M.I.A for doing so.

Yep, the infamous moment that took place at the “NFL Super Bowl XLVI” in 2012 saw the Sri Lankan singer-rapper let one rip during her performance of ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’.

The NFL has now spent 2 years in arbitration chasing $1.5 million for breaching her performance contract and supposedly tarnishing goodwill and reputation of the game. A further $15.1 million is being pursued and is justified by the organisation as what an advertiser would have paid for the two minute segment.

The best part about all of this is, M.I.A isn’t taking the situation too seriously, doing a funny tweet to Madonna as well as back in November last year claiming the gesture as ancestral from her Sri-Lankan origins.

M.I.A’s defence team have stated “The claim for restitution lacks any basis in law, fact, or logic.” Could the NFL be paddlin’ something that will never get resolved?
