Baths

With Will Wiesenfeld finishing up his live Baths tour, I managed to squeeze in 10 minutes to speak with him before I head down to see him play at The Corner in Melbourne presented by Novel

If you don’t follow Baths on Twitter, it would be news to you that he’s “loving it [and] having a really good time” in Australia. “The first show we had in Adelaide went really well and I’m looking forward to the rest of the tour.” Catching him in the middle of a food coma, he admitted he’s just “been eating way too much” and hanging out watching movies, but that sounds like a dream tour to me. I’m not sure why it’s a common theme, but international artists often seem to be fascinated by how good looking everyone is, how big the spiders are and the funny words we say. “I’ve only ever heard ‘keen’ used in conversations in Australia and I guess I just love that word [laughs]

As for the show? “It’s basically [Morgan] Greenwood on guitar and I’m singing and a tonne of electronics. It’s kind of like a set that goes a bunch of places, from song to song they’re not all the same, each is fairly different. There are moments of improv that are fun for us and it turns into something fun for the audience because you can tell that we’re doing it live which is good.” It’s no secret that Will found it hard playing songs from Cerulean, his first LP which launched his career, but “there are some songs [on the album] that make me cringey.” Fans of the album will be happy to hear that there will be “a couple of songs off Cerulean” in the show that Will is still “really proud of“.

Of course, there will be a lot of tracks played from Obsidian which is a beautifully dark and painful album and in a few months there will be an accompanying EP, which Will likens to “a centrepiece to the album.” “It’s kind of like in the same atmosphere.. the lyrics are kind of negative but paired with more of a pop type feel, so it’s a similar sort of landscape with the sound.”

Which leads to a question no doubt many fans are thinking – how long do we need to wait until the next album? Obsidian left me with an unquenchable thirst for more Baths or maybe I just crave audible melancholy in this form. “It’s not something I want to talk too much about, out loud because I think I have to hold myself to all the things I say. The last time I said that I was making a dark, pop record [and] I couldn’t really steer away from those ideas. So the ideas that I do have are very clear to me but I’m going to keep them private because I want to toy with them first so I know what I’m doing before I have to hold myself to my word.” It’s a lot more fun for him this way and allows for more creativity and not to worry, “I’m definitely not making a dubstep record.

With the Australia tour wrapping up and downtime, home and “playing Fire Emblem Awakening on DS” on the horizon for the young star, Will admits he’s devastatingly homesick. “I just moved in to a new place before I left to tour so I’m very, very homesick for that because it’s the place I’ve wanted to move my entire life so I’m really excited.”

Wrapping up the tour and successfully finding something “kind of complicated” with a hot Australia guy, let’s hope Bath returns to Australia soon because I sure would be keen on that.
