The Team Behind the Roland TR 808 are Ready to take ‘The Next Step’

Roland corporation, the team behind some of the most iconic analog hardware is set to update it’s most beloved system the TR 808 Rhythm Composer. First released in 1980 the TR-808 is a staple amongst producers from all genres thanks to its signature quality and sound (download the LiveSchool 808 kit here for free). Showing some insight into the exciting albeit unexpected success of the 808 the Roland team in Japan uploaded a new video, but that’s not all they wanted to share:

We were really surprised when people started using this rhythm machine as a lead instrument, in the same way as you would use a piano or a guitar. And because it had such a unique sound, people were recognizing it immediately, and saying: Ah, that is the TR-808. When that started happening, everyone was really excited. But by now, musicians want new and exciting things. So the time has come to take the next step.

From here alot of what we know is unconfirmed leaks (like the model image below) and rumour but we do know the new model, whatever it is, will be called Aira. Despite a famous reluctance to redevelop their past achievements it seems high demand has called on Roland Corporation for a change and the main question is will the new model retain it’s analog signiature or will the company move forward into this ‘new and exciting’ direction toward a more digital frontier?
