Photography Banned in New York Night Clubs. Hell Yeah!

Update: a real photographer talks shooting clubs and why the ban might not be such a bad thing.

Nightclubs in New York are bucking the trend of social photography following in the long standing footsteps of their European counterparts such as Berlins infamous Berghain venue.

It was back in 2012 we kicked a stink commissioning the piece ‘Photographers Do Not Belong In The Club’ with the overbearing sentiment that “It’s the one place you can go, once or twice a week, and act like a complete animal. Who the hell wants to see photographic evidence of them being fucked beyond recognition, especially on your favourite clubs website.” with that message now being shared on US soil.

The good news is clubs such as Le Baron, Chelsea’s No. 8, Output (who had already enacted this rule from the start) and Sankeys will now disallow punters to take photographs or videos of their evenings activities and their fellow party animals allowing people to be “free to indulge in whatever behaviour they want.” according to New York Times contributor Michael Musto with The Business Insider adding;

“The purported rationale behind the no-photo policy is that without smartphones constantly in-hand, A-list clientele will feel more comfortable, people will be more willing to let their guard down, and the party will feel more exclusive.”

Although we haven’t had clarification of a clubs own photographer being allowed to capture events or not, we’d say its a blanket rule to not shoot punters keep a focus on the music and away from the ridiculous need for attendees needing to prove their self-importance of having attended said event. Sure i’ve already got FOMO from missing out on say a Claude VonStroke DJ set but only hearing about how great it was will only make me want to see him next time that much more!

What do we think? Bloody great news to us.
