Going Deep – New Plastikman Album On The Way

Richie Hawtin has revealed some sumptuous details regarding the first Plastikman feature in over 11 years! Minimal fiends will be licking their lips with excitement. The insightful, elegant and thought provoking Hawtin detailed in a number of interviews from Miami’s Art Basel not only the Canadian’s support of the visual arts – including his appreciation of Rothko and Anish Kapoor – but how this passion has fostered his growing ambition to return to his production based roots that truly established him in the dance music world.

Hawtin has examined the similarities between the freedom of expression that imbues visual artists to place their often conceptually stimulating works on the walls of some of the worlds most public spaces and the music production process that allows musicians to equally explore creative processes in whatever way they want. Hawtin indicates that playing a set in New York’s Guggenhiem made “music came out of me because of the opportunity to play in this beautiful architectural place that is actually renowned for art, not music. And now there’s a new Plastikman album.” He notes, “it put me back in the studio and inspired me enough to work on new material, and in five days I created a new album.” The poignant interview, conducted on behalf of Société Perrier, can be seen below.

On a broader note, discussing the current state of the dance industry and the whole EDM debate at Art Basel, Hawtin offered up some equally astute anecdotes in an interview the Miami New Times. When asked about the term and its often negative connotations he stated –

“Our mission is more to open up the definition of EDM and allow the new kids to know that there’s many different forms of electronic dance music and that they shouldn’t just follow what’s popular; that they should kind of find their own pathway. If they do that, they can actually find an incredible, diverse, rich tapestry of beautiful music.”

He adds, “you want to give the people who are interested in digging deeper a shovel and let them take their own pathway.” So head to Bunnings this Christmas folks and pick up a shovel, as there is little doubt based on the above comments that Richie Hawtin and his Plastikman alias are going reaaalll deep and conceptual on this new full length feature. We’re excited!
