Skream Doesn’t Use Samples… Or Does He? Busted (Updated)

SKREAM

Update: A bit of context can change things, the quote was in relation to his latest original “Roller Coaster’, not past productions. Good to see Skream using original sounds these days. Apologies.

Skream is taking drastic steps to move away from his origins as a dubstep producer, more so with the recent announcement that he’s killed off his personal bass heavy imprint Disfigured Dubz, boldly claimed that the dubstep ‘movement is over’ , played an eclectic set and eventually flipped out at this years SXSW Boiler Room showcase and continued foray into disco sounding beats with remixes of Duke Dumont and big single “Roller Coaster”. His dedication to the groove doesn’t stop there with word he’s likely to produce a mini-disco album sometime in 2014.

With big moves come big words from the UK producer who has indeed made the transition so successfully, in-part by creating a real sound, one that accordingly to the pom doesn’t use samples as detailed in a recent interview with DJ Mag.

“The main thing about it is that there are no samples. It’s so easy to try and make a record that sounds like Daft Punk, but you’ll never be as good as Daft Punk! The musical element is really important to me. I finally feel comfortable saying ‘I’m making disco’. Before, I was finding it so hard to get that vibe, to make it feel authentic, now I’ve played some of the tracks out between big disco records and they stand up with them, which is the thing I’ve been aiming to do for so long. It’s so hard!”

Things may have backfired a little with Ghosts of Venice discovering that the sounds he’s been using could have been pulled from a sample construction kit titled ‘Disco Gold’, one of which Skream has simply sped up and vocals slapped over for his Duke Dumont Remix. Whoops, busted.

Even though sampling is the premise of most big tracks including the mask wearing robots Daft Punk, to say you don’t use samples when you do a big no no in our eyes. Wonder what Skream will make of this.

Skream will play next years Future Music Festival alongside Deadmau5, Chase & Status, Brodinski and many more.
