Kele Okereke to Release World’s First 3-D printed Vinyl for Charity

Bloc Party front man, Kele Okereke after releasing his latest E.P. through Crosstown Rebels earlier this month is about to drop a world first backed by the Bacardi Beginnings project. Teaming up with up-and-coming vocalist Bobbie Gordon the pair are set to release the limited single ‘Down Boy’ on limited edition 3D printed vinyl through an exclusive pop-up shop in London with all proceeds to music charity, Nordoff Robbins.

The technology is based on design by US researcher Amanda Ghassaei, developing a technique for converting digital music files into 3D-printable records. More a geek gimmick than a viable alternative to the vinyl press for the moment because “the record contains a single mono channel rather than stereo. Ghassaei’s technique involves depositing white, UV-cured resin in thin layers, creating wider, deeper grooves than traditional vinyl.” (The Guardian) Ghassaei is, more than anything, excited to see what people can do with her technique, looking forward to the more ‘outlandish applications of the concept’.

The Exclusive 3D Printing Pop-Up Store will be open December 13 and 14 check Bacardi UK’s Facebook page for more details.
