Jacques Lu Cont / Les Rhythm Digitale

In preparation for a four date Australian club tour, we spoke to the multi alias based genre surfing genius Jacques Lu Cont to ask some burning questions in relation to the dance music industry expansion, making a classic hit, ghost writing, DJ fees and more.

With the way we digest music so quickly, is it still possible for a current day producer to make a timeless dance track like ‘Jacques Your Body’?

Yes. I think classics come about because they are so good they get lodged in people’s hearts. A lot of tracks go by in a moment of vogue, and if a year later they feel over-played, they probably weren’t a ‘classic’. But the ones that live on and on always stand on their own feet. They have a magic you can’t define.

What’s your take on the state of the scene in dance music now as opposed to 10 years ago?

It’s really different. And really cool. There’s a nostalgia with the old scene but the new scene is also making its own. I don’t think that lives in the commercial zone, that’s always what it has been, but more in the producers and DJ’s who make it fresh with their heart and soul. They always do something interesting.

Do you spend more time ghost writing or making original material for your alias’s?

I like to go back and forth between the two. I love to take ideas from one style and take them to the other. Crossing genres is more exciting for me when its about using concepts and lending them to each other rather than taking specific sounds and just chucking them in rock tracks.

What is your take on current DJ fees? (i.e. Calvin Harris paid over 320k pounds for a private wedding function)

I think top artists fees being this high is nothing new. I remember in 1995 hearing that some bands at UK festivals were getting 300k to headline. That’s nearly 20 years ago! I think the talking point is that instead of a fee like that going between 4 or 5 band members and 30 to 40 crew, its going to 1 artist and maybe 5 to 10 crew.

Who did you enjoy collaborating or writing for in the past and why?

Luckily everyone so far! Madonna, The Killers, New Order, Kylie, Scissor Sisters. We’ve all ended up staying friends forever.

Is there anyone in dance music now that you would say you would love to work with and why?

L-Vis 1990. He’s a real independent.

What’s in store for Jacques Lu Cont and Les Rhythm Digitale in late 2013/ early 2014?

Over 2013 i experimented with Tracques and with an ambient album, i might do some others. Tracques Vol 2 is going to come out and there’s some collaborations i’m doing for a JLC/LRD album.
