‘Fade Up’ Round Up: Australian Producers On The Rise – Vergil & Basenji

Australia’s dance music scene is thriving beyond belief right right now, so it’s easy to miss the country’s most exciting new producers that are just starting to poke their heads out of the ground. It’s all good though, FBi Radio’s Sandro Dallarmi has got you covered.

Every week, he plucks out one of these head-pokers and features them in his mixtape/interview series, Fade Up. He’ll keep you updated on Stoney Roads fortnightly.

VERGIL

Much like Floria, Vergil possesses Gesaffelstein’s dark spirit in his eyes and a visceral sound at his fingertips. His music demands your attention, but he’s had mixed reactions around his hometown of Newcastle. The city certainly has its creatives and boundary pushers – a group of Vergil’s producer and DJ friends run a monthly club night where they can play whatever they like. However the majority of Novocastrian club-goers aren’t very adventurous, so Vergil sometimes finds himself playing to an empty room. There’s not much need for concern though – one listen to his music makes it clear to me that he’ll soon be packing out Sydney clubs as that brutal blend of techno and electro resurfaces underground.

BASENJI

Just like the African hunting dog of the same name, Sydney producer Basenji makes noises that sound a little unusual. He cut his teeth in a production duo with Wave Racer called Pablo J & the Lobsterettes, but just like his partner in bass, he’s now stepping out to do his own thing. Having been influenced and personally tutored by Wave Racer and Cosmo’s Midnight, Basenji creates melodic bass music that doesn’t need lyrics to be as infectious as any pop song.

The two tracks that he’s released so far are tributes to artists he respects. ‘Speak With A Dofflin’ pays homage to Cosmo’s Midnight, while ‘Tribute To The Cat’ is an offering to Norway’s Cashmere Cat. The latter track actually prompted a personal thanks from Cashmere Cat himself, so it’s pretty clear that Basenji is an artist you need to hear.
