Avicii Ignites Vegas Versus Ibiza Debate – Is Vegas A Product?

avicii

Avicii is known to speak freely about topics related to the dance music movement and his own success. In a recent interview with the Guardian, he opened up about a few of his worries and insecurities with the industry’s current state in quite cynical fashion.

“Originality is definitely missing from EDM” he complains at one point. “There are people looking for it and exploring but I feel it’s so big now it is just getting milked. House music is losing all its melody as it becomes more about how dirty the drop is and how energetic it is. It loses touch with what music really is. It’s gotten to a point where everything sounds the same. There is no longevity in what’s happening at the moment.”

Worried that money is becoming a driving factor of the music produced these days, he compared the monsters of Ibiza vs Vegas, the difference being he expresses that “Ibiza is about passion for music, Vegas doesn’t feel real. It’s a product.”

The irony of the situation hard to look past, with Avicii regularly seen enjoying being at the forefront of these Vegas shows and other blockbuster festivals. In saying that, being in his position when you have a fanbase of such mass its hard to avoid the situation. The positive to take from this is while the guy ___ he must be credited for his outlook.

Upon the topic of the controversial Ultra set, Avicii opened up on how he felt towards the crowd’s reaction: ”I knew it was going to be a shock. All they see is country and house music. They think, ‘Country? That’s old people.’ I knew it was going to be like that. It freaked me out when I got a bad reaction to the song, though, I must admit.” But he still stood by his music and expressed his desire to provoke people, rather than rewriting an old song to make a hit.

Avicii’s daring approach to explore new sounds and cross genres has resulted in collaborations with some big names, including Incubus’s Mike Einzinger and Nile Rodgers.

His debate cuts even deeper with his comparison of Ibiza and Vegas, expressing that “Ibiza is about passion for music, Vegas doesn’t feel real. It’s a product.” But, the irony in that statement is that Tim is a part of that product and enjoys the monetary benefits from the “money making machine” that is Vegas. The interview is telling of Avicii’s internal strife as an artist and EDM poster boy as he speaks about his insecurities and desire to push the envelope in dance music. Frankly, we as fans just want to hear quality music come out of this suffering and sounds like Avicii has the desire to deliver.
