Rival Consoles – Odyssey [Erased Tapes]

We featured the first free single ‘Voyager’ off Ryan West aka Rival Consoles‘ new EP last month, and yesterday Erased Tapes finally released the whole of ‘Odyssey’. We mentioned how a more natural sound is very obvious within the tune, and the rest of EP further proves West’s quest to create atmosphere and space from minimal arrangements.

‘I’m kind of obsessed with the idea of reduction. It’s all about using the right ingredients at the right points in time. A lot of these ingredients are short recordings, such as ice cracking, mechanical clicks, clicks from synth errors, sounds of debris, guitar plucks etc., which interact with the simple arrangements and create little hints of rhythm.’ – Rival Consoles

Living with contemporary classical composers Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds and Peter Broderick, their influence is apparent throughout the release with it being clear that West is highly selective of what he puts through the computer – this has resulted in a stripped-back, humanised, electronic-laden EP. With 2009 seeing a split release between West and Ólafur’s techno project Kiasmos – which revealed their mutual appreciation for dance music – Rival Consoles has also previously produced remixes for New York-based composer Nico Muhly and UK legend Jon Hopkins. This gives you a sense of his whereabouts.
