Records Breaking Records: UK Vinyl sales reach 10 year high

Boards of Canada

More than 532,000 vinyl LPs have been purchased in the UK so far for 2013, sparking a 10 year high in sales. With Daft Punk’s highly anticipated release ‘Random Access Memories’ coming in as the number 1 best-seller, the future for vinyl sales is looking bright.

With records breaking records, electronica geniuses Boards of Canada came close behind at number 4, while indie rockers Arctic Monkeys, Atoms for Peace and Queens of the Stone Age have proven that band music is, in fact, well and truly alive – especially with vinyl collectors.

“We’re witnessing a renaissance for records – they’re no longer retromania and are becoming the format of choice for more and more music fans,” says The BPI’s Chief Executive, Geoff Taylor. “While sales only account for a small percentage of the overall market, vinyl sales are growing fast as a new generation discovers the magic of 12″ artwork, liner notes and the unique sound of analogue records, often accompanied by a download code for MP3s… The LP is back in the groove”.

Vinyl sales now account for 0.8 percent of the UK’s albums market – up 0.7 percent from this time in 2007 – and while this humbling figure is incredibly small, it’s been a year-on-year increase of more than 100% and the BPI estimate that sales of vinyl albums could surpass 700,000 by the end of the year.

Fantastic news for musicians and labels, the top-selling vinyl records of 2013 in the UK so far are:

01. Daft Punk – Random Access Memories
02. Arctic Monkeys – AM
03. David Bowie – The Next Day
04. Boards of Canada – Tomorrow’s Harvest
05. Queens of the Stone Age – …Like Clockwork
06. Atoms For Peace – Amok
07. Vampire Weekend – Modern Vampires of the City
08. The National – Trouble Will Find Me
09. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Push The Sky Away
10. Black Sabbath – 13
