Moonbase Commander: Producing Outside Of The Big Smoke

What is Australia’s answer to the likes of Hudson Mohawke, Lunice and the harder side of trap music? Look no further than the 21 year old Moonbase Commander. A Wollongong born and bred beat maker who has been making waves through his unique style of trap and electronica that has lit a beacon on Australian and international dance music enthusiasts radars.

After growing up being influenced by an eclectic foray of artists including, Venetian Snares, Mr. Oizo and Slayer, you begin to understand why Moonbase’s music has an underlying darker element in composition. With a bunch of Aussie producer collaborations on his map and a dream goal of one day working with A$AP Ferg, we spoke to the real name ‘Nick Luke’ to ask:

Coming from a non-metropolitan area, do you think the area you live and work in affects the final output? (and here is what he had to say!)

“I don’t know – I don’t think so… I think that in the past the answer would’ve leaned more towards that yes it does, that being in more of a culturally isolated place would’ve yielded different results than if you had of been somewhere a little bit more relevant or saturated. But nowadays I kind of think that that notion has been erased to a certain degree, mostly because of the internet.

If you are connected to the internet, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, you have the global community at your fingertips, and a whole new set of circumstances comes with that. For a lot of younger producers nowadays, myself included, there is no such thing as a non-metropolitan or even metropolitan area – we are all part of the this big connected network which promotes new ways of thinking, sets new trends and everything within that fluctuates every single second.”
