Max Cooper & Tom Hodge – Fragmented Self EP (Part 1) [Fields]

With this latest release following on from his remix of Nils Frahm‘s ‘For’ earlier this month, Fields Records has introduced UK contemporary classical composer Tom Hodge to the family in this two-part collaborative EP with Max Cooper of starkly beautiful new combinations of the acoustic and mechanical. With ‘Part 2’ of the ‘Fragmented Self’ EPs coming out later next month, this is part one of Max’s work with the contemporary-classical composer. With the exception of the strings that underpin the techno-roller ‘Quantet’, each of the four collabs on the release begin with Tom’s raw solo piano, which were obviously then transformed as Max added layers of glitch, abrasion, tightly looped samples and his own cinematic style of electronica post-production. The EP also sees one of my favourite UK-based electronica acts, Petrels, remixing ‘Fragments Of Self’, along with a bonus tune ‘Von Der Klippe Fallen’.

Keep an eye out for the next EP dropping sometime in November, but for now have a listen to some of the most beautiful electronica around.
